Washington, D.C. — FDD Action applauds President Donald J. Trump for issuing an Executive Order today directing the Secretaries of State and the Treasury to begin the process of determining whether certain Muslim Brotherhood chapters qualify as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT).
FDD Action has long advocated for designating the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates as terrorist organizations. This effort has been championed in Congress since 2015, most recently by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL). Their bipartisan bill, the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act, would designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization and create a process for designating its members and affiliates. Today’s executive order represents a significant step toward achieving this important national security objective.
“The threat posed by the Muslim Brotherhood is not a matter of politics, it’s a matter of principle. The Brotherhood’s extremist ideology undermines the very freedom of belief that allows both Muslims and non-Muslims to worship without fear. Designating Muslim Brotherhood chapters sends a clear message that the United States rejects extremist violence and religious intolerance,” said Alexandria Paolozzi Moore, Director of Government Relations at FDD Action. “This is an issue that should unite all who value religious freedom, human dignity, and America’s national security.”
President Trump’s Executive Order (EO) initiates a process by which certain Muslim Brotherhood chapters or individuals may be designated as FTOs and SDGTs. As the threat of the Muslim Brotherhood continues to expand globally, the order establishes that it is United States policy to identify and disrupt these networks and deprive them of resources.
The EO directs the Secretaries of State and Treasury to submit a report and carry out actions to address this national security threat.
