The stockpile in Israel is a strategic asset that has been used by the United States to carry out military operations unencumbered by what could otherwise be lengthy supply and logistics challenges. The Weapons Resupply, Stockpile, and Alliance-Israel Act would reauthorize this stockpile, which is a strategic asset for U.S. forces and allows Israel to request access to munitions in times of crisis. Why It Matters
- Weapons staged for a crisis: The War Reserve Stockpile for Allies-Israel (WRSA-I) lets the United States pre-position weapons and military equipment in Israel that both countries can draw on in a crisis. Keeping it in place helps American forces stay ready for regional emergencies and ensures Israel has the tools it needs to defend itself.
- Four decades of proven use: The United States began stockpiling military equipment in Israel in 1984 and, in 1989, adjusted the program so Israel could access it during emergencies. WRSA-I holds precision-guided munitions, artillery shells, and other equipment. Most recently, the United States provided Israel access to it after the October 7, 2023 Hamas terror attack.
- Extends authority before it expires: The stockpile authority is set to lapse on January 1, 2027. This bill extends it to January 1, 2029, keeping the program in place for two more years.
